Thanks Hank, you and me both! Haven't been able to realize the solid potential of that billet RS2 yet.. can't wait.

Engine swap complete!

Post by urs6ville »

The engine is finally installed. I will be putting up a bigger write up about the process, but in the end we swapped out the old engine, took off the important bits and installed on fresh engine, and re-installed in to the engine bay.

There were a few hiccups but for our first time, I think it went well.

This was a process that started last August when I sourced an engine with a blown head gasket.... here are pics through the process:

Picked up the engine and brought it home in Dad's trusty econoline van
Image

Tear down progress, gasket was blown around cylinder 4
Image

Quite the collection of parts
Image

Crank from blown engine
Image

Close up of timing marks on cams while installed (before taking it apart)
Image

Taking apart the head, tedious work
Image

Stock rods to be replaced with SCAT rods
Image

Cleaning the pistons (reused the stock forged pistons)
Image

Pistons clean, SCAT rods installed
Image

Crank installed in fresh block (block was cleaned, fluxed, decked and honed), ARP main studs
Image

Refreshed head. Left it pretty stock, plan to take the head off engine that is currently in my car and building a head. No in the cards right now
Image

Rods/Pistons installed
Image

Bottom end all closed up
Image

ARP head studs in

Head installed

Tommis Billet crank cog

Reference PIC of N75 before puling the engine

Front end off, disconnecting things

Engine out

Tired Engine (head off)

Ready to pull EM and Turbo off old head

Fresh

Installed in engine bay, left intake off so we can connect everything with ease

Everything back together (my brother approves)

Bent valves that caught us in the middle (more on this later)

Ready for Bumper and lights

Re: Reed's 95 //S6: First Tuning Session

Post by urs6ville »

Finally got a tune on Sat up at EFI Express on Sat with all the E85 boyz.

As has been discussed there is a limit on the -6 hot side of these turbos. I was able to top out with an uber safe tune at 300awhp/300awtq @ ~25psi. Marc created a really smooooooth tune. Still waiting on the graph which I will post. My old ECU was an Uncle Bob version and pinged like crazy. No pinging here despite the ~100 degrees temps in the shop.. and damn near 100% humidity. While I expected more, I am very happy with the power delivery and the smoothness.

One of the E85 boyz had the same setup (Except for a port/polish'd head) and hit 405awtq on the corn, so I guess if I ever want to go that route I know approx what I would get.

Nice. 100% humidity and temps is not too friendly to any turbo, especially one that is on pump gas. If you are really feeling down on the power output, as Marc to overlap a 3071r at 25psi in similar conditions with your billet rs2, an you will start to feel better. On pump gas, the rs2 is not giving much, if any up to a 3071r.

It's not that I am feeling down per-say, just been a long road to feel like I got back to where I started from. the results are pretty much around others with RS2 and MRC/Pastore and other RS2 tunes, albeit the power in my case is delivered quicker, which is nice, and the tune is safe and obtaining the power at a lower PSI.

That said, this tune is much much smoother that my ECU was before... doesn't feel as powerful because it doesn't have the crazy "shot out of a cannon" feel of my previous but the power is smooth and pulls longer.

The e85 station I plan to use is closer to you than it is for me... A simple fuel change and a tune & you're good...

Getting nice VP gas tanks and getting a full tank plus 15-20 more gallons works reasonably well. I have done it, as I am 10-15 miles out of the way to get e85 where I am at.

Yes, E85 really isn't inconvenient for me either.. I don't daily drive, there are ~4 E85 stations within 10 miles. I'll probably take a look at an E85 tune at some point so I can swap over with the VEMS when I need to.

You don't happen to have a graph of the old tune do you? It'd be nice to see a comparison.

that would be be cool, i'll keep that in my pocket until I decide to switch over and go up to Marc's again for a second tune... just started reading through some e85 material... I see the different AFR so pump gas tune wouldn't work, makes sense.

Right now just enjoying having a proper RS2 car back :)
