Favorite BOVs?

Post by jretal »

So I'm buttoning up my new IC setup. Unfortunately, due to the thickness of the new core, I no longer have the space for my hobbled together stock Audi BPV opened to atmosphere.

Given the new space constraints, I've relocated the BOV flange and installed the old XS power BOV I had bought years ago. I was having a fair bit of compressor stall when I initially used this thing years ago, which is why I swapped it out. In order to alleviate some of the stall, I shortened the spring a few coils to reduce its pressure. It has an adjustment screw, so I can add back pressure if I find it's too much, but I have a feeling it's still going to cause issues.

Figured now might be a good time to start keeping my eyes peeled for a good BOV, but which ones are good to look at? They're anywhere from $30 and up... What's the go-to that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

Thanks all!

I am looking at the Tial Q since I want to as quiet as possible. My current "RS" BOV has tripped noise meters before at the track.

So I'm seeing Greddy and TiAL as manufacturers... anyone else? These are a wee bit outside my price range... lol.

Was hoping to hit a ceiling around $100.

Tial all the way. Not gonna happen for $100 bucks though. Get a used one

$185 shipped, has the clamps/flanges... pretty good deal.

You might also look at Turbosmart BOVs. They are very nice pieces.

Noone makes a better valve than Tial in the performance auto industry.

Any particular reason, or more a gut feeling?

Pretty much my three faves are Turbosmart, Tial and Synapse. All three are excellent products.

Its sort of a mix I guess. When holding any given wastegate in your hand, the Tial products always feel more substantial... I've had three or four of them and have never ever had a failure of any kind. Look at most high dollar race cars out there and you'll find Tial. Look at the fittings they use on their parts... even that little stuff is of higher quality than most other offerings out there. Basically, I know that if I get a Tial, I'm getting something which has been made with no functional compromises.

It is hard to judge a product without knowing how they engineered the product (which you can't know unless you work there or you spend hundreds of hours reverse engineering that product) so in that sense, it is a gut feeling thing I guess. I'm not going to pretend that I have had actual experience with the other brands (other than the ebay Tial knockoffs which obviously suck), but just looking at the other brands' parts puts me off. There are more palpable reasons though like experience and fit/finish that make it an easy decision for me. The bottom line is that, to me, Tial gives off the impression that they are making the best product they can without compromise.

I agree with what you're saying... it's just that the same gut feeling led me to Synapse. I might try them yet, but they are a pretty expensive experiment vs. a known top quality performer.

Thanks for the info, guys! I will see how the BOV in the car functions, and will keep eyes peeled for deals on a Tial or Synapse. Filling the coolant system today and getting the 'ol bird street tuned until I can get it on a dyno with someone who knows what they're doing :)

Hank, yeah I was able to get a new lens from the guy in Germany I bought the lights from originally. He was really cheap, and I was able to piggy back on an order Wiley had with him, so saved on shipping to boot.

Looks like the BOV I have on the car is opening like it's suppose to. Might have been a bad supply vac line I had going to it, but it's opening on low pressure revving, where it used to cause the pigeon chirp. SO we'll see how it deals with the higher pressures when the time comes and go from there. If not, looks like I know what to look for!
