thats all. just messin around with some stuff lately. the race car is put up for the winter i think, it will be going to a live axle 8.8" rear end and 4-link setup for next season.

so i started to work on this car. had to chop ~4" out of the framerails up front for B3/CQ (all suspension is from a CQ) steering. and rebuilt it all. put the front struts at ~5.9° caster.

my measurements showed the FWD VW and the CQ to be within .25" on the strut tops, center of strut. soooo, it should work.

the car came to me as someone elses failed project, so i basically have been cutting all he did out and doing my own thing. he tried to do a B5 A4 suspension in it. and he didnt get very far. i would have started with a fresh shell but this one had been widened around the rear arches leading edge and the fronts have been pulled pretty good. its gonna be a street(able) car and may do a track day or two and possibly some hillclimbs with it.

my own custom coilovers, made per the DIY and a 2Bennett 330mm front brake kit and rear rotors to match.

here are some pix to tide you'ns over. i even went to a friends shop and manually milled out some plates for the camber plate setup only broke the insert when i went to auto-speed, shoulda stayed manually doing it haha

suppose i should have started from the beginning.

his thought was all B5 A4 stuff. 1.8T, quattro 01A, the works. but he can and should stick with body work. he was going to have this project done and driving in 30 days front the day "GO" and started cutting up the cars. almost 20 months or something later, he finally just gave (traded more like) everything to me as it was beyond his ability. these were his pix, and when i went to get the car. i welded some steel to keep the rears from falling apart as he couldnt figure out how to do the control arms, and then had to make a something to support the front end while we winched it up onto the trailer.

its just so easy and convenient to update Facebook than to car forums. put "share" picture, type some words, even add pertinent people.

oddly enough, without responses i find it REALLY HARD to update places with progress shots, etc.

so, i will leave you all here with some parting shot goodness, and CHEERS!

everything the OP did on this car has been cut out, if it was structural. bodywork, he can do fine. welding framerails and reinforcing structural members of cars, not so much.

i know the guy thru Facebook who has the car now, and he has had to cut out and start over basically. after getting this far into it, he did mention that he may have been better off starting with a different shell, as this removal and backwards work takes time.

some of these pictures show the lack of welding the original guy did. he tacked and hacked stuff in, then covered it with bondo and seam sealer, thinking it was good enough. and yes, all of these gaps were just covered and glued up. the car would have fallen apart if it was ever finished by the first guy.

he had to lower the front frame rails to allow for the steering. done. car sits on its own now for the front, and he has to finish the towers after he gets the motor mounted in it. wants to make sure there is room for everything. he has not decided if he will use a FWD transverse steering rack like he did in his race car, or maybe a B3 rack, or even a Prelude rack. not important right now to him.

he was just messing around with test fitting the motor in it though, right now its just resting on the subframe, with an empty Quattro trans in it as well. axle placement, etc.

the rears, he said, were his biggest setback so far. he spent some time working around what he had, and finally said screw it and chopped it all out. these were what the OP did, and just covered up. this guy is plating and boxing everything up properly.

so he decided to gut the entire rear work the first guy did.



this is what he decided to do for placement of the rear subframe stuff. and this was about as far as he has posted there on Facebook. he keeps mentioning there on FB that this is not finished or final, just progress pictures is all. there is final welding, gusseting, strengthening to do yet.





and some shots with brakes (330mm 4 piston setup) and a test fit of the wheel. he isnt going to use this wheel setup as he mentioned it doesnt fit the way he wants, and it is also 5 lug x 112 and he is using 4 lug x 108 suspension. he just was seeing how the wheel fit into the wheel well.

whoops, got the post backwards. first he had to make the mounting plates for the top mount camber kits.

this he posted today..... making the rear strut towers. setting caster where he wanted it, and centering the wheels in the wheel wells. levelling the diff, etc.

street car still needs interior..... he said the rear speaker pods will still fit in their position even, and still use the rear deck cover piece.

looks like his real motor came finally. he also has the same exact car that the motor is from, '01 C5 A6 4.2L Sport.

well facebook is where i went after ban # 25 from Kotex. and MG well that just sorta petered out on its own i guess for reasons known to some.

it is time consuming doing a full blown build thread, it takes lots of family and car time from a person. and when a person feels like they be talkin to themselves, they will then choose to invest their time elsewhere, like back at home with family/hobby stuff.

but thank you for the comment..... its not like i am not doing stuff, just sometimes the stuff i do isnt worth the time it takes to post. this project, well that is different. its not the common swap, see. how many cars you read about in this configuration?

i tend to go off the norm, and do things different only to BE different. i originally planned to run this chassis with one of my race motors and spare SM4 standalone. but the V8 bug bit me when Derek showed me his 6 speed swapped A6, and then making the film for Dan sealed it i guess. i LOVE the sound of a HEALTHY motor. and i really enjoy working with VAG products.

i did think briefly about doing a rolling Vette drivetrain, shorten the torque tube and related 10". that would be bad ass too. but, i just do whatever i fancy, with no real plans or written ideas. i kinda just shoot from the hp. cut stuff off, make stuff, weld stuff back in/on. seems to work anyhow.

mounting trans.... instead of the mounting ears, i fabbed up a K-bar much like a MK1 Rocca. zerb and i dicussed this, and then Derek and i talked about it. and i will give it a try OEM subframe mount locations fit perfectly in this instance.

just using material i have laying around. DOM tube, and some plate. i went with this idea for ease of attaching tube to plate on a perpendicular fashion. bolts fit down inside the tubes. also using my favorite isolators. NHL pucks!

i forgot the start of the motor mounts. now that everything is mounted, i can pull the motor and trans, and weld out the mounts and gusset them and stuff.

got some headlights today and a free new core support. and put this Flea-bay grill on. not sold on it yet. also got a free black dash, full, as well.



pulled motor/trans and did all of the work to strengthen the motor mount ears and front subframe mounts as well. that shit isnt going ANYWHERE!

Richard, what are your plans for engine management? I heard someone you know or know of may be able to crack the factory ecu to make the factory management more swap friendly.

the guys i am talkin with both say for me to ditch the '00 ECU/harness and get '01. 5 wires to repin, and then tuning it is more better.

then D says to just run it, and ignore the check engine light as it should be fine to run as is.

i think the challenge will be to integrate the Corrado cluster with the 4.2L ECU/harness.
