I had an Elgin 288° 8v VW cam for a bit... it was very nice... lumpy as hell at idle but man did that little bugger scream up top.

Yes and no. I figure I'll need it again at some point, but eh, more tools are a good thing. I'll have pictures tonight. Tearing head and bumper off tonight.

So upon inspecting the engine bay on Friday, I have dsicovered yet again the #5 exhaust runner studs missing and loose. The bottom stud was completely missing and the top stud was about to fall out. Guess its time for some GOOD loc-tite. Hell I even trued the exhaust manifold (machine shop did it). Anyone else have this problem? I'm wondering if it has to do with me not having a flexi-pipe on the exhaust

Guess I'll have to budget for a flexi in my future. I'll do it when I have the 3" downpipe made at the local mandrel bender.

Was the manifold flat? If they're not they sometimes like to come loose

Yeah I know. I figured that was the root issue but apparently not. I've always been under the impression that heat will warp it once. Then, once trued, the issue would not resurface. Apparently not in this case. We'll see if a flexi fixes it.

Update: ugh......now the one exhaust stud still hanging on decided to snap. Guess I over-torqued the nut down. Lovely, now it sounds like a friggen diesel

yeah and on top of that...I put the new studs in and there is still a massive leak. I'm guessing I burned up the gasket. Guess its time to pull the head, do the guides, build the 3" down pipe, and basically fix all these stupid little issues

There really is nothing you can do to stop it from doing that. Its just what they do due to the way it was designed. thats why they designed the 2 piece example which is kindof unobtainable. I pretty much had to tighten mine 1 to 2 times per year depending on use. You may have better luck by upgrading the studs, or the few on the end to a bigger size. Of course, that means drilling and tapping. I think its worth the effort, but I wouldnt try drilling them without a press. I just cant keep it straight by hand.

Yeah I know. I'm thinking of possibly just building a damn header out of mild steel for now. I'm gonna start tearing the car apart once I get this B6 out of the storage unit and my life!

Yeah aint that the truth LOL. That's why I like my Dodge: add more power and you only encounter the same problem every time. That being less traction :foff:

Add a wideband? Yay that means time for proper tune! Oh wait I have less traction now! Throw on 19x13" viper wheels with 345 tread width? Oh how about NO traction with that!? Put on some nice cal-trac traction bars!? Heres some more no traction for you!

Well I give up. I played some more with the fuel system today trying to find the hot start issue and boost issue. I swapped out fuel injectors and nothing. Still same old crap.

They all had a good spray pattern when tested and where pretty dead on with the flow match test. As soon as I'm done with this B6 A4 this weekend, I'm going to tear the damn head off this car again, change the heater core rubber lines (might have a batch of silicon ones made up), build a 3" downpipe with a flexi, do the damn valve guides, etc etc. Tired of this bullcrap lol

The car seems to be getting slower and slower too. Maybe its the massive exhaust leak, but I'm gonna do a compression test this weekend.

Not sure. Did you ever check fault codes? :)

FWIW if I could get a 20vt 4kq running and daily driving, anyone could. CIS is stupid reliable and easy if you learn how it works. Doesnt take much at all to get the car running and driving. Aint much there in terms of components. BUT the good news is that you wont have to worry about it anymore! Woot :D
