Post by WOMBAT »

Nah, it's off limits till April :( I didn't want to do it, but I live on a college campus and I will not have it sitting in a parking lot covered in snow all winter.

...Can't wait till I have my own garage space when I grow up.

Hey Casey, how close to the tie rod and inner fender are those wheels? Any bad rubbing? Any rubbing on the body on the inside of the fender?

Hey guys!! Sorry, I'm lagging on any sort of update...

Keeping 3 old Audis on the road without your own garage requires careful planning of parts spending and working time :(

Phil,
no rubbing at all and I'll grab a photo today of the clearance to the tie rod.

Matt,
My bad. I just read your project page and I too need a drain on my catch can. I relocated it to the passenger fire wall which has helped but I still fill it up after 6 good 1-2-3 pulls and without the drain it drops onto my downpipe and that's a bit smokey...

More recently though the clutch slave cylinder has started giving out so I haven't been driving it. Speaking of which, I got paid and I can now buy that slave cylinder!

OFF TO THE INTARWEBBZ!

How do I stop this catch can overflow madness...?? Can I cap off the crank case vent and use valve cover only?

you probably need an intermediate separator that will drain back and the fumes etc wil still make it to the "catch" can

that will help a lot of the "oil slosh" you get from pulls and hard cornering under throttle

we just made on for jims 07k 4kq

maybe theres some pics in his project thread

UPDATE!

The 200 has been sitting on the sidelines as I have been trying to sort out how to drive the car on boost without ejecting all of the oil out of the crank case vent. Here's what I came up with and it's the best setup I've had so far (still need to do compression/leakdown to check the engine's health)

It's using 3 1/2" ID Aluminum elbows meant for splicing air conditioning systems and I picked them up off of ebay for something like $12 shipped. No expensive AN fittings!

The crank case vent is plumbed into the back of the VC and I'm pulling 2 lines from the opposite side between cam lobes. I have both lines routed to a empty oil quart bottle temporarily so that I could see what kind of blow by I'm dealing with. There is still blowby but for the first time I'm not leaking out of the VC gasket, rear main, or coating my engine bay in oil Drove for ~6 hours this weekend with the car show and had probably a total of 3" accumulation which is still a lot, but I think with a drain I'll be ok.

The concept

Rotated the injectors to make space for the new plumbing

Then it was time for some welding

Some paint

Also made it to the show this weekend Wolfsgart 5.0 was Saturday and Sunday. Got to hang out with Dana, Shawn, and Nick - great seeing those guys! I was not good about taking photos... Turnout for the show was awesome on Saturday but rain on Sunday morning scared a lot of people into going home. Too bad as it turned out to be a perfect day after the 2hrs of rain.

The classic audi class wasn't well represented on Sunday, but in any case I found myself with another 1st!
Image

Toward the end of the day some people were starting the 'ol rev your engine and launch control if you got it routine so I added the 5cyl to the chorus - it was a hit!

As Dana will surely chime in - maybe someday I'll actually launch it...

Nice. I have the same vc and I've been thinking about ccv. Interesting routing for the cc vent into the vc. I never thought of that.

My setup is one 1" line from ccv to 034 catch can and a drain back to the pan, without the drain the catch can would fill up not because of pressure and oil basically covering the ccv and shooting into it. It would blow out the top of the catch can! Ideally when I take the vc off to repaint I think I'll do it the way you have, kind of :) ccv into back of head and two big lines coming off the vc into the catch can with the drain back.

Nice work on the 1st! Need more vids, and launch the damn thing already!!!

Yea I need to pull my pan off or just the extension and put a drain in. I have the metal breather pipe on the crank vent and then a 3/4" hose from that pipe to the valve cover. those are 5/8" ID hoses to the catch can. I wanted dual 3/4" to the can, but I didn't check that these 3/4" elbows were 3/4" OD or ID. Turns out its OD :(

Yes, must lanch. So afraid of breaking it though... So little money to repair if I do!

Launching isn't really terribly interesting IMO. High rev clutch slip is where it's at. Ignoring the clutch wear it causes....

Nice job at wolfsgart. And very slick work with the vc venting. I'll have to address PCV stuff soon seeing as mine is not up to snuff and I see seepage at the VC often.

Nice VC solution. No problems with oil on the "low" side of the engine where you have that crank case vent routed into the vc?
