What's Your Cylinder Count?

Post by loxxrider »

This has been done before, but not here on TPP. What is your cylinder count? What about your total displacement? Your cylinder to liter ratio or liter to cylinder ratio? You can use anything from lawnmowers to cars, trucks, and boats. As long as it is an engine and has a home in a car (no spares) then add it!

-1985 635csi - 6 cylinders, 3.5l, 218hp
-1990 M3 - 4 cylinders, 2.3l, 195 hp
-1991 200 20v - 5 cylinders, 2.2l, ??? hp ??? (let's call it 500 for now)
-1994 530i - 8 cylinders, 3.0l (but I only own half of it, so let's call it 4 cylinders and 1.5l), 215 hp
-2001 330i - 6 cylinders, 3.0l, 230 hp
-2001 M5 - 8 cylinders, 5.0l, 400 hp
-2009 CTTS - 8 cylinders, 4.8l, 550 hp
-2012 X3 - 6 cylinders, 3.0l, 258 hp

That puts me at a total of:

51 cylinders 26.8 liters 2566 hp 1.9 cylinders/liter .525 liters/cylinder 96 hp/liter 50 hp per cylinder.

Adding weight to this would be fun too to find your overall power to weight ratio :) What's your cylinder count?

Running cars? I have two rotors and however much power that a pair of 680cc injectors running static will make...

The white VW has five cylinders but it has enough power to get up to nearly 70mph on flat ground, so horsepower is somewhere between "diesel Rabbit" and "1200cc Transporter loaded with stoned hippies". And saying that it "runs" is generous, the clutch hydraulics are of the disappearing/reappearing mystery function and the electricals are iffy as long as it doesn't rain.

Hrrrmmm... lets see...

1985 Audi 4000S Quattro - 2.2 liters - 5cyl - 588hp (490whp x 1.2)
2008 Audi A4 Quattro - 2.0 - 4cyl - 211hp
2003 Audi A6 Quattro - 4.2 - 8cyl - 300hp
1989 Toyota Pickup 4x4 - 2.4 - 4cyl - 113hp
1990 Nissan Pathfinder XE V6 4x4 - 3.0 - 6cyl - 153hp

My totals are:
13.8 liters / 1365HP / 27 cylinders

EDIT: ooops missed my hp/liter calculations:

SO: HP/Liter = 98.91 and HP/Cylinder = 50.55hp

Nice! The hp/liter number is nice :)

I did some power to weight calcs on mine. The weights may be slightly off... I'd like to take some of the cars to the scale to see what they really weigh. I found the numbers pretty interesting for comparison sake. The power to weight ratios really agree with my seat of the pants comparisons of the cars. For example, I always felt the 635csi and M3 were similarly fast feeling. I also feel that the Cayenne could beat the M5 in a race. The numbers agree!

wow. i dunno all the hp's.

2 x 2.0L 20v 4cyls @ >800 awhp each. (conservative 1000 chp ea. we know this is higher unfortunately but playing along.)
2 x 4.2L 40v v8 @ 300?
1 x 1.8T 4cyl @ 180 hp?
1 x TPI 'Vette V8 @ 325 hp? 5.7L
1 x VR6 2.8L supercharged @ 250 whp?

42 cyl.
3400-ish on the CHP?
22.7 L?

42 cylinders 22.7 liters 3400 hp 1.85 cylinders/liter .540 liters/cylinder 149.7 hp/liter 80.95 hp per cylinder.

sound ok? shit i forgot my 22hp lawnmower, my weedeater, and the work truck. but i think those things would all bring the averages down.

Is there a prize for *lowest* specific output? :wtf:

I've got a 20kW generator that has a 2.3-liter engine (basically the same as in a Ford Pinto or Fairmont for those old enough to remember). 20kW = 26.8 horsepower, figure the generator itself is 90% efficient, that means the motor would be putting out about 30 HP, or 13 HP/liter.

My two actual car engines are a little more respectable: 2.3-liter 4-cylinder Saab that puts out maybe 275 HP at the crank, and the 2.22-liter 5-cylinder AAN in my Audi I'd estimate is putting out 300 HP.

So 9 cylinders total and 4.52 liters total for ~502 cc/cylinder or ~2 cylinders/liter, ~63.9 HP/cylinder, ~127 HP/liter. Each car weighs about 3100 lb. (with no occupants or cargo) so 6200 lb. / 575 HP = 10.7 lbs./HP

Total cylinder count (and I'm not going to compute HP/cc because it's depressing):
5 Audi
4 Saab
4 Generator
1 Riding mower
1 Push mower
1 Snowblower
1 Other snowblower
1 Weedwhacker
--------------------
18 total
Be alert! America needs more lerts.

Oh. I forgot my atv and a couple of small engine crap (weed eater, chain saw, etc).

these assume 25% drivetrain loss on the quattros. and the urq is theoretical horsepower. definitely doesn't run yet.
