Audi S2 From Brazil

Post by broder »

Greetings everybody,

The reason I`m reaching this forum is because I`m trying to contact Hank Iroz, I have recently purchased a 5cyl header with him but have had no success in contacting him in the last few weeks. Not sure what went up, but I really do need that header to finish my car. Knowing he is a part of this forum (Hank himself recommended it to me months ago) I hope I can get some decent feedback in here, and, hopefully, my header.

I will also use the opportunity to introduce myself. I am from Brazil and currently own a 94 Audi S2 Avant. I'm currently building her in a 900+ hp project, got a brand new GTX4202R 72mm turbocharger sitting aside just waiting for my header.

Car setup:

Injection
Fueltech FT-400 Fully Programmable Injection with Color/Touchscreen Interface.
10 fuel injectors (5low 80lb + 5high 160lb)
5L catch-tank w/ 3 DPL pumps

Car runs on E100 streep pump ethanol, we don't have E85 here in Brazil, our Ethanol is mixed only with water (around 4% water).

Engine
82.5mm 8,5:1 JE pistons w/thermal treatment and teflon sidewalls, I.E. rods, ARP studs, O-rings. Stock crank. Looking forward on more upgrades (stronger ligher rods, dry-sump setup, block-guard).

Head has been worked on for increased flow. Stock cam on exhaust, slightly more agressive on intake (don`t have the numbers here). Upgrades on valves, retainers, lifters and springs, still using hydraulic cam. Revving up to 8000rpm. Looking forward to head upgrades soon.

Turbo
I originally used it with a Precision 6765 sleeve bearing, runs on about 20lbs in low-boost setup and 30-45lbs in high-boost setup. Stainless tubuluar manifold and PTE 46mm wastegate. That turbo blew up so I purchased a slightly smaller Master Power 6465, which runs on similar boost levels (but does not produce as much power). Next up is the GTX4202R, the header I ordered with Hank should have a integrated quick spool valve, which will allow me to use this turbo with a 1.28 hot side. Just waiting on some news about it... :bangshead:

4"downpipe and full 3.5" stainless catless exaust with two direct mufflers.

Custom-built front intercooler, 3" aluminum intake pipes.

Transmission
Stock 6-gear, revised syuncros and bearings.

Tilton OST-II 7.25 twin-disc cerametallic clutch w/034motorsport aluminum flywheel

Adjustable shocks w/ H&R springs

Toyota Hilux SW4 Twin-Piston brakes up front, stock at back.

Unfortunateley the closest 4x4 dyno is 250miles away, so that means no dyno graph for now. Also, the car has never measured the 402mts in the latest setup (the car did measure 201mts, but that was in previous setup wich used a K27 turbine, stock head, less boost, and obviously much less hp).

Awesome car!

I'm particularly interested in your braking set up... we don't get Hilux trucks here very often but I'd like to know more about a compatible option.

Thanks.

These brakes are sub-par for the car right now, I'm currently looking for something stronger. The reason we used this brake setup is simply because we found out the brake calipers would fit in. Rear brakes are very hard to find, since it is a street car and I need the handbrake, so I'm still running stocks on rear. It´s not a car you would want to take to a trackday...

Love your S2 and welcome!

Couple questions:

** I've heard good things about Master Power but don't know anyone who has used one - how do they spool and hold boost compared to a similar sized Garrett or PTE offerings?
** 0-ringing cylinders seems pretty popular south of the equator but not so much up here... I've heard the comment that it's not needed with the quality of head-gaskets these days - what's your take on that?

I wish you all the best with your manifold too. Hopefully it's being perfected as we speak!

Hello,

Master Power is Brazilian, they are easily accessible and are seen a cheap alternative over here. Here in Brazil they do not offer ball bearing turbochargers, only export models go ball bearing (ironically, their best models are not sold locally, probably no market around here). The 6564 MasterPower turbocharger I'm using right now was 8 times cheaper than the GTX4202R (counting taxes), so that puts you in a price perspective. They are ok, performance (lag/flow) is just about what you should expect for their rotor size, no big miracles. Great value, but people looking for ultimate performance will have to go after Garret/PTE/etc. I can´t talk about the export ball-bearing models, though, as I have never seen one in real life.

About O-ringing, in my personal experience I have not needed them below 2kg (29psi) of boost. A high quality gasket and ARP studs will do just fine. However, at 2.5kg (36 psi) I have already have had leaks with regular gasket+ARP combos. Once you go over 3kg (43 psi) you are very likely to have problems if you don´t use O-rings, at least that´s what I have personally seen in my cars and cars of friends. I´m not sure how it works in other places, but in my personal experience, whenever I go over 30psi, I just use O-rings and that leaves me out of problems. Since we will be going up to 3.5kg (50psi) with the GTX4202 (we will initially start with 3kg - 43psi - of boost, and will go increasing up to 3.5kg, which should be the ideal boost for the power target), going O-ringless seems like a big nono for me.

What are you doing for protrusion of the ring and what head gasket will you use? I had mixed results with copper plus .040" wire protruding .006". I want to try it with a standard MLS like a lot if M5x bmw guys do at .004 protrusion above the deck on .040 wire

Wow - 8x cheaper is crazy... but why Master Power wouldn't offer their best to the home-crowd seems even crazier. There are some things in the US that won't ship to Canada and what people do is get a US address from one of many providers. This allows an item to be purchased and shipped to the US address where they turn around and ship it out to you.

It may be worth it for people in Brazil to get an out of country shipping address and have the ball-bearing Master Power turbos shipped there. If you could get similar performance at even 1/2 the price, of Garrett / PTE, it still seems worthwhile.

Thanks for the info on o-rings too. I'm only running 30psi so a MLS head-gasket will do just fine :hide:

That would end up making it just as expensive as GT and PTE alternatives. What increases the cost of overseas turbochargers is shipping cost, import tax (those two alone are responsible for a two-fold increase in price, so a 2000 USD turbocharger arrives here at 4000 USD), and also money conversion rate. Since dollar is really expensive right now (1 USD = 2.7 BRL, just 2 years ago 1 USD was 1.5 BRL), everything bought overseas with dollar becomes proportionally more expensive.

I have actually never responded to you via internet forums Richard. There are 3 outstanding emails non returned since you gave me the information on the oring specs I had asked for(Thanks by the way!) One of the email was asking for the QSV info the other was asking me to defraud the brazilian government by devaluing the package/commit mail fraud with my government.

Regardless, I was hoping to get a 42r mounted up in an engine bay with you manifold to verify manifold fitment, but it appears you are more interested in having it without fitment verification. I am pretty sure it would fit regardless. You will have it in your hands by the weekend via Fedex Express with full 30% value mail fraud.

Cheers,
Hank
