If anyone is serious, feel free to shoot me a PM, there's one an hour from me for $13k in driver condition with a lot of recent work done, not really "restored" but a solid driver and good restoration/restomod candidate. There's one two buildings over for $8k complete with a cool options package that is rust free but the motor is out and has "issues." I'll have another one for sale here soon for $15k, again, driver condition, no rust, almost all original euro car. Again, none of these are long hoods or restored, but they are cars you can get into and slowly start restoring.
But there's one I won't tell you about because too many would cry at the priceIt's all in who you know, just like anything else.

I have had substantial daily driver seat time in a 993, and while it was well powered, stopped well and not to mention had nice input I still really don't die for the car as a whole. I think the allure wears off after a while, and really they are supremely expensive for even the most simple repairs, which happen to be often. If you have some weird emotional attachment to that icon I think go for it, but I never grew up caring about Porsches, I was drooling over McLaren F1's, XJ220's, F40's, and Lotus v8's. I just don't see the price/performance point with them right now.
The mechanical thing is cool but isn't everything, a 60's bug can be very fast and mechanical but still not too enjoyable. Still haven't got any rides/drives in any 80's vintage bmw's so no comment there haha, but there are so many options.

A 993 is way different from a pre-964 car. It's like comparing, say, an Audi TT to an ur-Quattro.
Which is somewhat ironic, because I'd rather have a 911SC over a 993, but given the choice between a TT and an "urk", I'd drool over the older car but the practical side of me would take the TT.
Being practical sucks sometimes.

I've sort of given up on this idea unless I somehow inherit a ton of cash.
I'll likely end up with a 914 if I decide air cooled is an absolute must have, or an ugly 996 if it isn't. The 996 is just a ton of car for how cheap they've become.

Yeah I noticed the 996 prices... Ridiculous. It'll either be a 996 with mods or something old. I'm seriously considering an 07k swap. If v8s fit, a little 5 cylinder should...

The IMS bearing issue is something you really want to be weary of but at this point between a lot and most cars that have either suffered engine failure or had the upgrade/fix/maintenance done. That's the biggest issue, but not to say it won't suffer some other random and serious engine failure

I have a problem with any car you are scared to mod for value reasons and would get raped on any track (both drag and road race) by a new toyota Camry. Maybe if I had it as a 3rd car with a good daily and a fast toy, but probably not even then.

I was looking for a 911 or a M491 turbo look for a very long time, but the prices have doubled, then tripled. So I went after a '89 928 and it's fast and handles like a big go-kart with the gurgle/rumble of a big V8. I still get looks and comments all the time on the car.
plus they are really price reasonable at the moment. I would suggest to grab one now, because they are slowly going up in price and value.

Unless it's a 5psd GTS (which is 911 money), I personally would never look at a 928. Can't stand the look of the early ones... Part of the reason the 968 is getting 993 headlights molded into the fenders.
A 944 turbo in my mind is much more fun all around...but you have to be content with about 350whp on a stock block or around 550whp on a built motor. People have thrown lots of money at those engines (8v and 16v) and not many have made much over 500whp. 928 is pretty similar, you have to spend a even more money to get what most people consider nowadays 'marginal' horsepower. Not to mention there's even less space on a 928 than 951 to work on the engine. Unless you do an 07K swap

I think the limiting factor is the diff.
