Chappers' 200 20vt sedan - Pearl

Post by chappers »

Hi chaps

Let me introduce myself, I'm Chris and I have a bit of an addiction to tired old (unique) cars that need resurrecting :)
I can't help myself really, those dog tired high mileage cars or projects that are forlorn and forgotten, I fall in love really.

So I'm relatively new to the Audi scene really, never owned one before, but having come dangerously close to buying a S2 Avant once (damn I should have bought it!)*
*I should mention I'm British and this was when I lived in the UK - I was ~24yo and could not afford the insurance :o

I've only had Pearl for 1 year and I was previous on MG forum, see project thread here http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=55748

I just attended a Euro show in Louisville where I bumped into Nick (20VAvant) and he basically nudged me in the right direction to here.
I ''binged'' on a few guy's project threads on here over the past few days and I'm in awe! So much amazing work going on it's very inspiring to see.

For Pearl though, for the moment, she's remained very tame and I'm just working through some small repair jobs as she's a leggy old girl.
But I'm saving the pennies for the obligatory VEMS.....

Oh and I think I'm also addicted to this forum, I can't stop reading the project threads, i just finished ''AMD is the best's'' whole story! WOW! :o

Woo! I love it! What a beautiful 200 20v. She'll treat you well :) Looking forward to progress on this. The condition looks a lot like mine when I bought it. These cars really hold up well. Nice steering wheel and headlights.

The T44 mafia just continues to grow here :foff:

Not heard this yet, supposed to flow 2000 kg'/hr
We test commercial vehicle engines up to 600chp
This is a 'low cost' solution to simulate a 16L engine flow rate.

Got me thinking about a possible sequential setup for the high HP builds I've seen, where the turbo response is quite laggy. Could a vortech supercharger be added to improve low down power and torque?

I don't think a centrifugal supercharger like that is the answer to low end power. The other variations of superchargers would be much better for that. However, I like the idea of sequential turbos even better. It just takes some very fancy plumbing.

Pentosin pentosin everywhere but not a drop in the resevoir!
(Actually I do have to keep topping up to the correct level)

Anyone know where I can get new hoses?
What do you guys do when yours swell up and start leaking? Ermm should I rephrase that?

LOL,rephase not necessary. :D
I would try some local hydraulic shop with the hoses.

You do obviously have some hose leaks but I'm betting your major leak source is the rack itself. That's one of the worst problems with these cars.

Thanks, that's a good idea, but I would have to remove the banjo fittings, which are currently not leaking - so i'm sort of reluctant to disturb those, hmm

It just seems to be leaking at the ends of the hoses where they are hose clamped onto the reservoir, if i could find the appropriate diameter/type of hydraulic hoses, i might cut off the swollen ends and connect the new to old hose via barbed hose connectors. Anyone used that method before with success?

But thanks Chris, i'll check the rack for leaks as well....

Don't worry about the banjos, if you get new crush washers for them, they will seal reliably

Cheers Chris, I appreciate your advice especially as my questions are so mundane and don't even compare to the in depth conversations and pioneering updates on this forum!

I'm ordering a recharged brake accumulator from David Kase so I'll be replacing hoses then.

Not a problem, I like responding to the simple ones as long as I have the answer. Some of the stuff that goes on in here is just too complex to be enjoyable when I'm in certain moods (including some of my own stuff) so it's refreshing to see the simple things :)

Thanks for the help, I'm working through the simple things to fix first so I can push for more power somewhat reliably.
Maybe next year's bonus I can buy and start messing with VEMS, then I can join the club ;)

I just received my recharged brake accumulator from David Kase. So I want to fit that this weekend and get the hydraulic lines remade while I'm at it. I'll take them off and get a local place to make them up using the old banjo fittings.

I also decided I'd had enough of the annoying squeaking coming from the shifter area. So I removed the boot for a look, I found black powder all over, similar to disintegrated foam. The rod at the rear of the shifter area seems to rub the body in that area, like it's missing something or dropped? Also found a loose little white plastic collar, wondering where that is from?

Any advice?

Cheers
Chris

looks like the part 42 in the diagram below is maybe worn out and causing excessive movement? maybe the source of the black powder?
Either way I cant find the part on Jim Ellis website.

I also can't see that mysterious white collar in the diagram below....

Found some interesting reading here
http://www.audifans.com/archives/1999/08/msg00183.html

Looks like this is the part I'm looking for, oh and there's that plastic collar in the middle, also looks like the black powder is probably from that mount!

All sorted, and didn't cost me a penny! Turns out the shaft was shoved under the rubber part of the mount, so it wasn't properly supported, it permanently rubbed against the body, and it knocked the white collar out of the mount.
The gear selector mechanism must have been removed at some point and reinstalled incorrectly.

Image

I took the mount off and popped the collar back in, put it back on the shaft and it's perfect! Like driving a different car! And most importantly no squeak!

Thanks Chris, it was one of those small problems that is really satisfying when you fix it!
I thought if the mount was actually broken i was going to make one rather than track down the part number etc..

Might need your advice when I start replacing this brake bomb today!
