Head dropped off at the machine shop to ensure cyl 3 is still sealing. There may be molten aluminum on the seats or something. Also may be surfaced again too if needed.

Will be pulling the stock engine out of the sedan soon, freshening up the bottom end with rods, rod bearings, rings and all new gaskets. Then will be dropped into the Avant.

Got a call today from the machine shop. Only the two exhaust valve seats needed to be cleaned up. Everything else was good. Excellent.

I like the updated coolant return line, replacing the stock rubber line when it's cooked is a real pain.
Do you happen to remember the adapter you needed to match the threading on the coolant manifold?

That is strange brah. I have always seen the heavy det on the intake side. I wonder what was going on there...

So wtf... What did the plugs look like? So it could be lean or somehow more advanced. Is the oil squirter working? I don't know. That's weird, just extreme heat. How did the #3 piston look when the head gasket went? No signs of any det?

I would individually test the injectors as they are, hooked up to the fuel rail, into bottles and make sure they're all flowing the same. You obviously need to fix this before another engine goes together.

Plugs were covered in oil from the drive home on 4 cylinders. Not destroyed though. All fully in tact. Can't comment on the oil squirters though. No real good way to check that that I'm aware of though I'm fairly certain that's not the case.

Cyl 3 after HG fail:

Image

No signs of det that I can see here but the gasket may have let go so easily there wasn't a chance for it to damage the piston. Not certain.

Injectors are now in my buddies car and have been for months on an EFR6758/VEMS/E85 setup without an issue.

I can't diag the VEMS/harness until the engine is back in and running unfortunately. Obviously driving the car normally will not hurt it until I can find the issue.

I tend to think that's a pure heat issue. That'd probably be the hottest area of the piston with the least material thickness. In a pure heat-related failure, that may just be the spot where it's going to start. I'm still thinking lean on that cylinder.

Thoughts?
