I actually may have one in the parts pile. I'll have a look when I get home tonight.

I just went out and looked. I'm fairly certain it's a 3.89 being as it came along with a trans and mc1. Would you know of a definitive way to tell?

What is the 3 letter code by the axle flange? That or the other way to do it is to pull the side cover and divide the number of ring teeth by the number of pinion teeth.

I have a 3.89 locker out of a B4 V6 car. It's a long nose which might be a different style than you need.

Wow you like doing things the hard way! ;)

Here's all you have to do: lock the diff, then rotate the input flange clockwise a bit to take up any play. Use a sharpie to mark a line across the input flange and case, and one output flange and the case - so you can accurately count turns on the flanges when they're rotated.

Then rotate the input flange clockwise and note how many times you have to turn it to get exactly 1 full turn of the output flange. It should be just under, or just over, 4 turns. If the former it's a 3.89 diff, if the latter it's 4.11.

sorta. in practice differentiating (haha. get it!) between 3.89 and 4.11 this way is harder than it sound. due to gear lash, having to make sure you rotate both flanges at the same time, etc.

True... there's definitely not much difference between the two ratios.

But you don't have to rotate both output flanges if you can lock the diff. And technically if you were unable to lock the diff, you could hold one output flange in place, then count how many input turns it takes to make the other output flange do 2 revolutions. Although in some cases that would require 3 hands... :wtf:

200 20v's had a 4:11 but any quattro 5k/20v 200 should be 3.89
