IAT sensor in the intake hose pre-throttle body?

Post by UrSobsessed »

Anyone done this? Hank was saying it works better for WOT since the sensor isn't affected by the heat soak in the IM. Idle readings might be way off but they're always a bit strange from the heat soak anyway.

I've done this in my V8, put it close to the filter. A lot of cars have them installed in factory airboxes (or built into the MAF). I originally had it installed in my intake manifold, but my IAT's would go through the roof when it got heatsoaked.

Since I'm boosted and gonna have w/m soon, it would need to go post IC. I was thinking, if I did this, that it would go in the hose just before the throttle body.

Thinking back, this is how I had mine setup on my 944 Turbo engine too, about 6" from the TB in the post-IC hardpipe.

I did it too, seemed to read really well there, temp changes mirrored what you would expect and no heat soaking issues.

I'd cut the house and put a piece of spacer pipe in the middle or build an aluminum pipe and add silicone ends.

That's how mine is set up and I've been very happy with it.

The sensor's mounted in the back of that black pipe that goes by the alternator.

Before, when I had the sensor in the stock AAN location, the temp would rise steadily as you sat with a warm engine idling. Now it much better reflects the actual temperature of the air going into the engine.

On my old 20vt 4ktq I put the IAT shright before the MM hose. I had a hard pipe there and just made some holes for it. Worked great.

So I was thinking of mounting it in the hose right before the throttle body but there wouldn't be any flow going past it when idling. Where it goes depends on where I can put the w/m injector. I've had to rethink all this since the IM I got has a different orientation than I expected.
