Last year on my way home from Carlisle my car died on the road. I had it towed home and after too much time poking around I figured out that the distributor basic timing code was caused by a stripped distributor gear,
I replace the gesr with another bronze 034 gear and thought it was a fluke.
Just prior to Carlisle I noticed a grinding sound on startup,it lasted for about 2 seconds after releasing the key, at the time i and other thought it was the starter bendix.
The sound is back.
I'm about the pull the distributor and fully expect to find a another torn up gear.
Any suggestions why this isn't happening?

Did you check the distributor itself? If it isnt spinning freely it is going to pass that force to the gear and that could cause problems.
