i could barely go a day without starting on this thing

i had already ordered the rear bearings, and i have some extra hubs, so one corner is now 5 lug

here's what i did.... and this is via Martin Pajak's instructions put up all over, but i'll do it once again since tons of people are always asking

i used the stock rear struts, rotors, calipers, carriers, and bearings. the only thing different are the hubs, which are from a 5ktq front strut. appearantly the front and rear hubs are the same on a 5ktq, so if you have one to pick them from, don't just grab fronts, rears will work too

step one, remove strut

step two, remove rear hub and wheel bearing

key ingredients...

step 3, press it all back together as if you were replacing the wheel bearing only, but put the 5ktq hub in place of the 4kq rear, and you'll end up with a strut like this

dang!, someone stole mah wheel!

install new 5lug hub equipped strut

redrill the holes on the stock rotor for 5x112

install test wheel with too large aspect ratio tire

viola'! man, those rims look at good on there as i thought they would. i'm keeping my eyes open for a set of fuchs possibly.... cause these cars look sweet with em' 8)

What size tire is on there? 225/60 ? I'm curious if you could fit a 235/60 in the wheel well.

it's actually a 205/65/15.... way too large. i have some other wheels here with 205/60's and they fit a little better, but i just want to go with a 205/50 and call it good

the fronts are more involved. the options are...

URQ front struts, steering arms, and lower ball joints which will add up $$ real fast.

so! my plan is to take 5ktq struts, cut the tube off just above the hub/carrier deal, and then take the stock struts, cut the carrier off, clean the tube and slide it into the 5kq lower section. this is what scottmandu said he's done. this will allow use of the stock 4kq steering arms, spring perches and strut cartridges.

now there's one more issue. the lower ball joint in the 5ktq strut housing is only 18mm, the 4kq is 17mm, and what i want to use is the 19mm units from a 80/90q, so will have to find a way to get the ball joint diameter bored/drilled out to 10mm here real soon.

the last issue is using rear axles in the front, but swapping, left to right, and right to left.

sweet! i just test fitted some A4 rotors and calipers from a B5 1.8t that i've had laying here forever and they fit! (this is on a 5ktq strut housing for reference) so, i think i'll use them since they have a 4mm larger rotor, and deeper pads for more swept area.

i was just looking up some replacement rotors and they are actually 288mm.... so 12mm larger than the 276mm G60 parts 8)

part # is 4A0 615 301 D and they are used on the A4's and A6's at least in the 96-98's that i checked.

Just transfer the 4k spring seat to the 5kt strut! THis way you can use Ur-q front shocks etc. etc. :-)

ok! big update. after someone pooh pooh'd me on AOL saying that people have been using A4 hubs for years, appearantly since before i was born... to do 5 lug swaps on B3's, a new solution for my 5 lug swaps has been uncovered to me,

B3 struts that use the 75mm wheel bearing
5ktq hub
4kq rear wheel bearing

this will kill many birds with one stone.

#1. swap to 5lugs
#2. allow use of a strut with an easily obtainable 19mm ball joint
#3. allow use of the older through spline axles with the larger axle shaft and inner CV
#4. allow me to keep about 10mm of wheel clearance since the B3 strut doesn't have so much offset.
#5. allow me to retain the stock 4kq steering arms.
#6. the b3 strut housing is a good deal lighter than the 5ktq

as for brakes, i bolted the A4 rotor and caliper to the B3 strut and they fit beautifully, so the brakes are covered

this is soo cool because i either haven't been looking in the right places or something. but this whole 5lug swap just got easier,cheaper, and giving more tire/wheel space!
