Looks like you and I are having some very similar fun with rust and welding I can't really even understand what is going on here. Don't understand how you know what the heck you're doing! The car doesn't even look like a car at this point! Definitely one of the coolest builds around.

It really all boils down to patience and more patience. I've decided that I will spend as many hours at is takes to get this shell
as good as I can get it. I will go over every inch of the body and get is sorted............... I bloody hate rust!!!!!

The next car will be tubular framed carbon fiber good shit , and will be a twin turbo'd v8 .........and it aint no Audi.... think horses

I had a very productive day.

The floor is nearly finished. I anticipate maybe another 15 hours.......hopefully

Today I installed a coupe gt front subrame on the rear to make sure it cleared the rear diff..........no problems !!

Next order of the day was to verify that I had my rear control arm brackets in the right position. After some head scratching as to how I
was going to do this exactly, I decided to use some threaded rod. The position of this bracket is really critical. If the bracket is welded out of
position the control arm will bind during suspension travel.

Also I have some fettling of the battery box in order to fit it in the same position as the road going Sport quattro. It's going to be tight next to
the driveshaft, just like the factory car.

All in all a great day. It might not look like it, but that's a full day's work right there.

That's okay, I have so many custom parts to build it's just crazy. Again, Martin to the rescue with his holy grail parts stash

He kindly loaned me his hoard of sport quattro control arms, now I can make my own. I made a jig and started drawing them up in the computer. I'm thinking of making a few different designs.
It would be so easy to move the center point forward thus increasing the caster. I'll have to fabricate a set , and play with the caster specifications. Also I think I'll make a set
to accept a stock 4000/urq ball joint.

Hopefully it all works out. Much nicer working on the computer indoors :-)

Well today might just be the last day of working on the shell for the year. I froze my bollock's off again. I was even welding in a light snow flurry.........I think it's time to stop

I can say that the floor is almost done. I had a really productive couple of days. I'll probably spend another 29-30 hours cleaning up the floor and making fuel line,fuel pump,handbrake,shift linkage
brackets etc, then I can focus on the roll cage and such. I'm really glad I completely ripped the floor out. It was alot of work for sure, but worth it IMO.

Question... how do you paint the inside of something that you're boxing in like a frame rail? My friend told me there is some kind of weldable paint. Is that how it's done?

There is weldable primer (though my experiences lend me to believe it's a b!tch to work with - ie still not nice to weld to), or there are sprays that you can do after you're done. I saw it on TCP Global, iirc. It's like a wax, and it has a longer hose that you put into the area and spray that way and it supposedly coats everything.

That being said, I stuck with the weldable primer behind my UrQ rockers when welding them to the OEM 4000 rockers.

Craig, spectacular work as always! And I say get a portable tent and a propane heater and work through the winter . Carlisle 2014 is right around the corner!!!

Any time I have bare metal to metal contact ,I either paint the part first, then grind the paint off in the weld zone, and then use weld through primer. Once all welding is finished, I then seam seal all joints. Once the final paint has been done, I drill holes where needed, and spray a wax coating to all internal areas where the paint can't be applied.

I used this method on my urq with great results.

Well the weather has finally beat me for this year. Bring on the Canadian winter.

I still have many parts to build over the winter, so all is not lost.

I made these up yesterday.......it's finally spring !!!

Not only will these add strength to the chassis, but I now have somewhere to bolt my Recaro's to.
