Question torque on ARP cylinder head studs

Post by da_trem »

Looking at retorquing my ARP cylinder head bolts. Information about that is misleading. Some do, some don't.

Mine where torqued once at 80lbs/ft. Should I be concerned ?

Which kit do you have? If undercut (ARP 204-4704) retorquing is not necessary as they are technically stretch studs, kind of like OEM. If non-undercut, then retorquing may be a necessity.

Undercut set. No retorque then.

Thanks a lot!

No personal experience here (my 3B is stock, head bolt-wise), but I remember someone posting about needing washers under the nut to help spread the load and avoid digging in to the head. I think it was chaloux who wrote about this.

The ARP kits come with washers. It's the used sets that dont ;)

Yes, I am aware of that. ;)

BIGGER washers needed to avoid cutting into the head by not distributing the load enough.

Oh well, i'll recheck these anyways since I'm in need of a new timing chain. Cams are already off. I'll come back to you with results as retorquing was necessary or not.

As for the supplied washers in the ARP kit, I not using these. I've ordered HD ones from Thuppu on S2 forum.

If anyone needs ARP head washers, just let me know.

Did my timing chain last night. Rechecked torque of the head studs nuts. They were all within specs, the undercut set I have haven't loosened a bit.

Those washers are sexy. Also...I always retorque, undercut or not. 07k wont take the bigger washers because ARP made them proper the first time. ;-)
