86 Alpine white 4000 commemorative , AAN / 01E / VEMS

OK so for a while I have been looking around for a new driver... Been searching for a long time for a clean white 4000. Finally saw one pop up, my craigslist alert app failed me but luckily got a tip off I have been working every day but emailed the guy 3 times, took a day off and got someone to cover me and arranged a trailer for the morning... The car was too clean to not take a chance on. Finally got a hold of the guy at 7AM and was down in Seattle within 2 hrs with a trailer.
PO was an audi enthusiast and purchased from the original owner in California. The car was given to his brother, a car guy didn't know much about german cars. He tried to sell it, someone took it on a test drive and was gone for two hours+ and came back and the car wouldn't run. He did a tune up done on it and spent about $800 to get it to run. Let it sit since last sept. and now it will start, but it only runs until it warms up then appears to starve for fuel or completely die.

Some details on the car:
1986 Audi 40000 Commemorative Edition with the red leather.
All service records since new, clean carfax.
164,335 miles. Odometer still works, all windows work, sunroof works, Etc.
Extremely clean survivor, inside and out - clear peeling on hood though.

My goals for the 4000: 20VT, 01E 5 or 6 speed, VEMS
Well I don't know how this worked out so well but as luck would have it, I found a "Parts Car" that has everything I have wanted for my white 4K. Found it just over the border from me in BC.
The only problem? I don't know if I have the heart to take it apart. This car has a special significance to me because it has been passed all over Washington and two of my good friends owned it.
It was 20vt with stock URQ CIS and very clean inside and out but never ran right and has now been morphed into a 20vt.
The conversion is done very well with a front mount radiator and dual fans which I really like. It has developed some cancer and I need to figure out whether it can be repaired or not. If there's any chance its worth saving I wont scrap the car.

I did replace the fuel filter yesterday and ran some seafoam through the 4000. Checked the ISV and cleaned it but it was really clean to start with.
Its going through fuel pretty fast and has a hesitation on light accel and low RPM's. Almost feels like it's running rich. I am going to see if I have another coolant temp sender and work towards testing or swapping that out.

So worked on the CE a bit yesterday. On the side of the road.
I drove it around for around 40 miles after I got it and it ran rough but never stranded me. Yesterday I made it about 3 blocks and she died and would not restart. Spent quite some time looking for any vacuum leaks or anything related to that but the way that it died was almost like a complete loss of power. Today I will be doing a good cleaning of everything related to the battery grounds.

I think the issue of the rough running is possibly separate. It may be related to the coolant temp sender, or it is worth a try but the part I ordered was wrong. Looks like I need to do some better searching.

Check the ground wires on the side of the intake manifold. They can corrode and break at the ring crimp. Pull the connector off the ecu temp sensor while its running. If it starts running worse (really rich) then the sensor and related wiring most likely aren't the issue.

I found one bad ground so will clean that up. The block to the battery negative was disconnected. Also found a weird brass jumper wire under the fuel pump relay and will try a different one of those.
Havent found any change from unplugging the temp sender while the car is running.
Never did figure it out yesterday spent almost all day working on the coupe and making room in the shop.

On the turbo 4K I Did get the proper USB->Serial cord and get the VEMS hooked up to my laptop. did a little driving around.
It is running great at idle and part throttle but under boost everything is off so I babied it around for a bit.

Id be interested to hear your opinions from the seasoned VEMS tuners, this tune is for a car with a different fuel pump, same injectors, different turbo.
My guess would be with the boost being so far off it would be better to start with a base tune that is for stock turbo? Any thoughts? Also does anyone have a VEMS map for stock turbo AAN 440CC injectors?

For the stock 4K I can not get it to run properly. It will die as soon as it is at full operating temp. I haven't devoted much time to it. This morning I finally invested in a cheap smoke tester that uses mineral oil. I should be able to get somewhere with this, testing vacuum lines. If not, I am not going to waste any time on the stock 20v engine. Will report back on how that thing works. A proper smoke machine is about 1,200+ this one is $120 but having one of those around can be so convenient.

Im one step closer to just taking the rusty 4000, putting it on the lift and take the engine/drivetrain out to put in the clean 4K for now. Then figure out what to do with the body, It needs a good amount of work to it.
I was considering just lifting the body off of the engine/trans/subframe try and make it as easy as possible.

Time to work on the "donor"


Old Exhaust out. With the Magnaflow muffler this sounded reallllly good. I think I am going to save it. Everything else will get redone with stainless and V-bands. I am not looking forward to doing the over-the-axle portion.



One thing that is sweet about this 4000 is that all the mounts are done on the subframe front and rear.


Really surprised with a car from Canada, I didn't have the use the torch barely at all. Had a few bolts stuck on the driveline and had to be really careful there. One broke, but other than that everything is coming apart real easy.


The challenge on dropping this engine out of the bottom is going to be the turbo. I got the downpipe off but getting the 4 bolts to remove the turbo is going to be really tough. Everything has been soaking in Kroil all night. Only other way i can picture it happening is if I can lift the car of the top and have the engine also move toward the drivers side, just enough for the turbo to clear the engine mount. Not sure if there's room.

Well I did get the engine out the bottom. Turbo did have to come off but it wasn't too hard to get once I removed the oil and coolant lines to it so I could get a wrench in there. Not too bad really. Everything came apart





Got the rear diff, suspension and subframe out too.

The next thing I need to figure out is my linkage issue. When I purchased the swapped 4000 with the 01E the linkage was hitting the trans tunnel. Very hard to see here. So I need to compare the stock to the 01E, do some reading and see what needs to happen.

I am at the point now where i am ready to transfer over the AAN/01E into the "clean 4000" commemorative edition body.
I have one thing left to sort out, the donor car already had the 01E swapped in- From driving it I could tell it had an issue with the shift linkage, turns out it was hitting the tunnel and rubbing against the back of the trans. I have read through some threads about how to swap in the

I need a little help deciphering what exactly I can do to remedy this issue but the problem is that I'm a little unsure of what parts were used to do the swap in the first place. Although they are rusty now the brackets look professionally made but I can't tell where they are from.

The easiest way I can think of to remedy the issue is to find a way to drop the back of the trans a little. I could use something smaller in place of the 30mm spacer under the drivers side bracket but that will effectively rotate the trans as well and that's not what I want to do I don't think.

Here is the trans. It is installed using no spacers for the axle and these "mystery" brackets as shown.
